Winslow is back off a four-game suspension

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Yoenis Cespedes didnt get much sleep after playing in the longest major league game of the season, so the Oakland cleanup hitter found an energy drink to get him going. It obviously did the trick -- much like the Cuban slugger has done for the Athletics since he arrived last season. Cespedes drove in four runs, Seth Smith knocked in three with a bases-loaded double and the As beat the Los Angeles Angels 10-6 on Tuesday night. "The reason I was so good was because when I got here, I drank a Red Bull," said Cespedes, who doubled and tripled to pace Oaklands 10-hit outburst. "I was ready for the game." One night after outlasting the Angels 10-8 in a 19-inning classic that lasted 6 1/2 hours, the As had a few problems defensively but looked just fine at the plate while beating Los Angeles for the fifth consecutive time this season. Cespedes led the way with two towering drives that hit the extended portion of the outfield wall at the Coliseum, but Oakland got plenty of production from the rest of its lineup as well. Smith, Derek Norris and Eric Sogard also had two hits apiece while Jarrod Parker (1-4) pitched into the seventh inning for Oakland, which has won 13 straight against AL West teams. Not bad considering most of the players from both clubs didnt get to bed until nearly 4 a.m. "We pounded the coffee, tried to get that caffeine and get our legs underneath us," Norris said. "We had guys banged up so a couple of us at the bottom of the order had to step it up and create some havoc on the basepaths and set it up for the top of the order." Mike Trout drove in four runs and Mark Trumbo homered for the second straight game for the Angels. Los Angeles fell to 9-17, the worst start in franchise history. The Angels are 0-5 against Oakland for the first time since 1990. "We have to find a way to get leads, hold leads and win ballgames even when youre not as deep as you need to be," Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said. "We have a lot of things on the pitching side that were trying to work through and get a little more continuity from our starters and our bullpen." Playing in his third game since coming off the disabled list, Cespedes had an RBI double in the fourth, a two-run triple in the fifth and a sacrifice fly in the eighth. The As are 3-0 since getting their cleanup hitter back. Before his return, Oakland had dropped eight of nine. "His bat is huge," Parker said. "Hes a complete player. Having him in the lineup, he makes everybody else comfortable around him." Unlike Mondays game in which the teams combined to use 16 pitchers, neither manager had to go too deep into the bullpen despite shaky outings from both starters. Parker allowed four runs and walked three while the Angels Garrett Richards (1-2) gave up seven runs in 5 2-3 innings. Both teams were also sluggish on defence early. Oakland committed two errors in the third, leading to the Angels first run. J.B. Shuck reached on an infield single and went to second when third baseman Josh Donaldson threw wildly to first. Erick Aybars groundout moved Shuck to third and he scored when shortstop Adam Rosales made a throwing error on Trouts grounder. Los Angeles returned the favour in the fourth. Cespedes doubled in Smith and went to third when Aybars throw home bounced past catcher Hank Conger and went to the backstop. Aybar was activated from the disabled list before the game. Cespedes then scored on a wild pitch by Richards to put Oakland ahead 2-1. Trout put the Angels in front 3-2 with a two-run double in the fourth. Richards, a reliever at the start of the season, couldnt make it hold up. John Jaso hit an RBI double in the fifth to drive in Norris with the tying run. After Rosales walked, Cespedes tripled off the wall in left-centre to give the As a 5-3 lead. Oakland loaded the bases in the sixth to chase Richards. Nick Marondes wild pitch allowed Norris to score from third, and Smith followed with his bases-clearing double to right that made it 9-3. Parker threw in the As bullpen to stay warm during the top of the sixth but left after giving up a leadoff walk to Aybar in the seventh. Evan Scribner, Sean Doolittle and closer Grant Balfour pitched the final three innings for Oakland. Trout hit an RBI triple off Scribner and scored on Albert Pujols groundout. Trumbo -- whose mammoth home run a night earlier still had Coliseum security guards buzzing 24 hours later -- followed with his fifth of the season, a solo shot that cut the gap to 9-6. Sogard singled leading off the eighth for Oakland and scored on Cespedes sacrifice fly. NOTES: Maronde was optioned to Double-A Arkansas after the game. ... After missing five games because of a hamstring injury, the wide receiver was limited in practice Wednesday but coach Rex Ryan was optimistic Holmes could be on the field Sunday at Buffalo. "I think now hes in a good spot and ready to return," Ryan said. "In my opinion, I think hell play. Well see as the week goes on, but I feel pretty good about him playing." Holmes went down in the Jets 38-13 loss at Tennessee on Oct. 3 and has been rehabilitating since. It appeared he might have a chance at playing in the Jets last game against New Orleans on Nov. 3, but was kept out and used the bye-week break to continue to heal. "He had a major hamstring injury," Ryan said. "It was the worst one weve had this year, by far. He was trying to come back and he did a great job in rehab. I think at the end, it got closer and closer. "Could he have played against New Orleans? If it was the Super Bowl, maybe. But Im not sure of that." Holmes, speaking after practice, acknowledged that hes excited about the prospects of playing this weekend, but is trying to remain cautiously optimistic. "At this point, its still day by day," he said. "Im inching a lot closer to playing and I just have to get the green light from the trainers. I can say, Yeah, I want to play, but the production on the field at practice and during the rehab stuff has to be drastically improved for them to give me the green light." His return would be a big boost to the Jets receiving corps, which will be without Jeremy Kerley for at least a few weeks with a dislocated elbow. Holmes, who missed most of last season with a foot injury, has 10 catches for 243 yards and a TD in four games. "At this point, being 5-4, we need all of our hands on deck," Holmes said. "So to get an opportunity to play with this team and to push for a playoff run is something that all of us want around here. I definitely have got to continue to take it one day at a time and be smart about the decision I want to make for the team and not just for myself." When healthy, Holmes is a proven playmaker and a player who commands attention from opposing defences. That could open opportuniities for others, including Stephen Hill, who was held without a catch against New Orleans and has just 10 receptions for 107 yards in the five games Holmes has been sidelined.dddddddddddd The Jets have had to rely on contributions from unlikely sources in recent weeks, such as David Nelson, Josh Cribbs, Greg Salas and Zach Sudfeld -- all of whom who werent on the team until last month. "Tone definitely brings a lot of energy to our offence and veteran leadership," rookie quarterback Geno Smith said. "Hes obviously a tremendous playmaker and can make plays out on the field. Its just good to have him back. Hes a guy who definitely was a major part of this offence and we missed having over the span of time he wasnt here." Smith and Holmes were still working on building a rapport at the time of the receivers injury. Holmes was gradually worked back into the offence during training camp as he healed from his foot injury, and that slowed the chemistry. There were simple things such as knowing the routes Holmes likes to run, how Smith delivers the football and developing a trust in each other that the two are just getting back to improving. "At this point right now, its about moving forward and looking forward for what we can do now," Holmes said, "and not worry about what we didnt have in the beginning." Theres more good news for Smith and the Jets offence: Tight ends Kellen Winslow Jr. and Jeff Cumberland are expected to return. Winslow is back off a four-game suspension for violating the NFLs performance-enhancing substances policy, while Cumberland missed New Yorks last game because of a concussion. "It makes our offence, I think, not only more diverse, but it gives is a chance to exploit some matchups," Smith said. Kerley didnt practice, as expected, and Hill was limited with foot and knee ailments, but Ryan downplayed those. "I think hes had some of those (injuries)," Ryan said of Hill. "And, again, he practice. He was limited, but I dont know how limited. He looked pretty good to me." Defensive end Leger Douzable (illness) and linebacker Garrett McIntyre (knee) did not practice, while defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis (back) and backup running back Alex Green (hamstring) were limited.
