London, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Liverpool will go in search of a rebound performance on Sunday when Brendan Rodgers men face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The Reds have been exceptional this season, leaning heavily on the attacking prowess of Luis Suarez, who leads the Premiership with 19 goals scored, and Daniel Sturridge, who has nine tallies. But the holiday period of fixtures was always sure to test the clubs top four credentials as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Boxing Day. The Reds outplayed City for large portions of Thursdays match and opened the scoring when Philippe Coutinho found the back of the net from a tight angle in the 24th minute. City responded with an equalizer seven minutes later when Vincent Kompany outmuscled Martin Skrtel on a corner kick and nodded the ball down into the bottom right corner, past the outstretched arm of Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. The winner came for City in first-half stoppage time when Alvaro Negredo slipped through on goal and hit one with the outside of his boot that Mignolet misplayed and it rolled into the net. Despite the loss, Rodgers praised his teams effort as they gave City their toughest test on home soil this season. "I was very proud of the players, I thought they were absolutely outstanding," Rodgers said. "They really took the game to a team that is a top, top side full of top European players. "Were disappointed not to have won the game, never mind losing the game. We showed great confidence and belief, scored a wonderful goal and could have had a few more. We have things to learn from the goals we conceded, which were disappointing. "I am very proud of the team. I was here at the Bayern Munich game when Bayern were outstanding, but apart from that every other team Manchester City have played here - really good sides as well - theyve scored a hatful of goals against. "Everybody walking away from the stadium would feel we at least deserved a point from tonight - and were disappointed we havent won." Chelsea is coming a 1-0 Boxing Day victory over Swansea City as an Eden Hazard goal in the 28th minute was enough to allow the Blues to extend their unbeaten streak in league play to three matches. Jose Mourinhos strike force of Fernando Torres, Demba Ba, Willian and Samuel Etoo have struggled to score consistently, something that is beginning to wear on the Portuguese manager. "They kill me," Mourinho said. "Every game Im tired in the end. "At halftime we all should be relaxed with a comfortable result and we werent and the first thing that happens in the second half was probably the biggest chance of the game. "You dont score, you finish feeling you are going to concede. But the boys, they worked hard defensively and in the last part they looked comfortable in their control of the game." Also in the Premiership on Sunday, Everton will shoot for a bounce-back effort against Southampton at Goodison Park after suffering a shock 1-0 defeat to Sunderland on Thursday, while Newcastle United hopes to build on their best performance of the season -- a 5-1 destruction of nine-man Stoke City -- when they host Arsenal at St. James Park. In Sundays final fixture, Tottenham goes for a second win under manager Tim Sherwood when the club hosts Stoke City at White Hart Lane. On Saturday, West Ham United welcomes West Bromwich Albion to Upton Park following a 3-1 loss to Arsenal, while Aston Villa battles Swansea City at Villa Park. Hull City hosts relegation-battling Fulham at the KC Stadium, Manchester City faces Crystal Palace at the Etihad Stadium, Norwich City welcomes defending champions Manchester United to Carrow Road and Saturdays lunchtime fixture sees Cardiff City host Sunderland at the Cardiff City Stadium. Canada was 2-0-2 in the round-robin portion of the tournament and had trouble finding any offensive spark. That changed in the playoff portion, as 17-year-old Boyd Devereaux scored a clutch marker late in the semi-final to beat Russia 3-2 and then opened the scoring in the final as Canada beat the United States 2-0 to claim gold. His fourth and last tour win was the Irish Open in 2010, when he also played in the Ryder Cup.JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jacksonvilles offensive makeover is just getting starting. The Jaguars signed former Minnesota Vikings running back Toby Gerhart and former Denver Broncos guard Zane Beadles to contracts Wednesday, bringing the free agents in to replace longtime starters Maurice Jones-Drew and Uche Nwaneri. And former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Emmanuel Sanders visited the facility Wednesday. Signing Sanders would give Jacksonville a potential replacement for wideout Justin Blackmon, who is suspended for repeated violations of the NFLs substance-abuse policy. "They know the pieces they want to put together," Beadles said. "They want to build this thing for the long haul and plug in some guys in certain areas that can really help bring this team along. Hopefully I can be one of those guys for this organization." The moves might not be the one Jacksonville really needs -- finding a franchise quarterback -- but they could help improve one of the leagues worst offences in recent years. The Jaguars ranked 31st in total offence last season, 29th in 2012 and 32nd in 2011. General manager Dave Caldwell and coach Gus Bradley did little to tweak the offence in their first season, outside of drafting left tackle Luke Joeckel with the second overall pick. But its clear theyre focused on revamping the offence this year. They let Jones-Drew walk, cut Nwaneri and traded quarterback Blaine Gabbert, the 10th overall pick in the 2011 draft, to San Francisco in exchange for a sixth-round selection. Throw in longtime centre Brad Meesters retirement, and the Jaguars had plenty of holes. The already filled two in free agency. Gerhart signed a three-year deal worth $10.5 million that includes $4.5 million guaranteed. Beadles signed a five-year, $30 million contract that includes $12.5 million guaranteed. The team also re-signed quarterback Chad Henne and cornerback Will Blackmon, and signed free-agent defensive end Red Bryant and free-agent linebacker Dekoda Watson. The Jaguars arent done, eiither.dddddddddddd Sanders and former Pittsburgh Steelers teammate Ziggy Hood could be next. Hood also visited Jacksonville on Wednesday. Clearly, the Jaguars are intent on spending some of the roughly $60 million of salary-cap space they opened free agency with. And the wisest investments could come on offence. Gerhart, a second-round pick by Minnesota in 2010, played in 61 games with six starts for the Vikings over four seasons. He has a modest 276 carries for 1,305 yards (4.7 yards a carry) and five touchdowns. He also had 77 receptions for 600 yards and three scores. His arrival likely shuts the door on Jones-Drew returning to Jacksonville. Bradley essentially named Gerhart the starter Wednesday, saying he would like to get him about 15 carriers a game. Gerhart welcomed the workload, especially after sitting behind All-Pro running back Adrian Peterson his entire career. "I dont have that mileage on me," Gerhart said. "Im a semi-proven veteran without the mileage on me." And Gerhart will have a revamped line to run behind, with Joeckel returning from a broken right ankle and the addition of Beadles. The 6-foot-4, 305-pound Beadles was a second-round pick in 2010 who gave up just 2 1/2 sacks the last two years. His 62 starts are the second-most among offensive linemen who entered the NFL that season, just two behind San Franciscos Anthony Davis. Beadles missed just three snaps last season -- all at the end of a game -- and played every down in 2011 and 2012. "I take a huge amount of pride in my durability," he said. "Its something I hang my hat on. I try to take care of my body and eat healthy. I always want to be on the field." And maybe helping get Jacksonvilles offence turned around. "I heard great things about the direction of the organization," Beadles said. "In Denver, I went from a 4-12 team my rookie year to playing in the Super Bowl my fourth year. I want to be a part of that, helping bring this team along and hopefully we can get to that point eventually."
